The Research Initiative

The Research Initiative gives students the opportunity to explore economics outside of the classroom by learning in-depth about certain topics and by being exposed to economics research. The goal of the Research Initiative is to encourage undergraduate students to take a deeper dive into their interests in economics, gain practical skills, and learn how to use the tools that Economists use to answer important real-world questions.

We typically host regular teach-ins that cover a wide array of economic concepts, tools, and more. These teach-ins provide students with knowledge that help them connect what they learn in the classroom to real-world applications of economics and theory by exploring key concepts from various economics courses and by delving into basic statistics, statistical software, and data visualization.

Apart from these teach-ins, the Economics Society also be hosts several workshops that help students construct their own research questions and topics and learn how to read economic papers so that they may potentially begin their own research journey in the spring.

If you...

  • have any interest in economics,

  • want to get research experience, or

  • are thinking about potentially completing a PhD in Economics/Finance,

This is a great opportunity to bring your knowledge and experience to the next level.

An added bonus is the opportunity to participate in and help construct something new.

If you are interested in joining or have an idea of a topic you'd like to research in the future, please reach out at tufts.ec.society@gmail.com!

Scheduled Meetings

This Spring semester, TES plans to host workshops to help students prepare for research. Past events are:

  • “How to Read Research”

  • “Pursuing a Ph.D. in Economics”

  • “Stata Crash Course”

Past Research

In Spring 2023, our team developed a paper, “The Impact of Social Capital on Student Test Scores.”  This paper involved exploring a number of published research papers to develop our research topic and evaluating data sets to create a polished final result.  This coming Spring Semester, we hope to do the same with a new paper topic selected by the group.

Please note that our research teams generally work to produce full-length, original pieces of work. A short op-ed is not the normal outcome of this initiative.
